Breastfeeding and Obesity

We all know that breastfeeding has many positive benefits. Research has demonstrated repeatedly that children who breastfeed are healthier (among many other benefits such as immunity to disease, etc), however recently the myth about breastfeeding having an impact on adult weight has been debunked (CNN.com). In the push to get more people to breastfeed their children, it was said that breastfeeding can decrease an individuals chance of becoming overweight when they become an adult.
Some health officials claim that 15-20% of obesity could be prevented through breast-feeding.
However, recent research finds that there is no link between breastfeeding and obesity as an adult. The Harvard study, published online this week in the International Journal of Obesity, involved nearly 14,500 women who were breast-fed as infants and approximately 21,000 who were not.

A CDC official states that an action taken in the first year of life would be "remarkable" to have an impact 40 years down the road. However, the consensus remains that although it may not have affects in adulthood breastfeeding has significant benefits for children.
