IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING SIDS

SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants from birth to age one year and claims approximately 2500 lives each year. SIDS is extremely frightening and can claim lives without any warning... have you heard of parents waking up to go see their baby and the baby has died for no apparent reason?.. that is SIDS.
Several years ago the Back to Sleep campaign was developed and as the name describes, encouraged parents to put babies on their backs to sleep. Although it was not entirely understood, the Back to Sleep campaign decreased the incidence of SIDS. Yet, parents could put their child on their back and the child was still at risk for SIDS. Despite years and research it has remained a mystery.... until NOW!!!
First Candle, an organization allied to prevent SIDS announced this groundbreaking news today 4:00pm EST and will be published in the Journal of the American Medical Association tomorrow (Wednesday November 1, 2006).
New research shows that SIDS is not a "mystery" disease, but has a definitive biological/genetic component.
Did you hear that?! It is not a mystery, but has a biological basis. This is huge!
It is the hope that with this new finding, infants will be assessed for risk factors and certain treatments/preventative measures will be taken during times that are deemed the most vunerable.
I will post more as details become available...

In other news. . .
Parts of umbilical stem cells have been used to successfully create small parts of liver in the UK. The people behind the research state that whole livers will not be available for transplant for several years to come, however, this is a huge breakthrough for research and medical testing. It is also projected that within the 15 years, small peices of liver may be able to used in patient treatment. This research also suggests that human subjects will no longer be necessary to test medicine. Currently the study is heading toward Peer review.
