Preeclampsia

Fact: Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal death and often occurs without warning (Lifelines: Jan 2007).

What is Preeclampsia?

Researchers have found that there are two proteins produced by the placenta that are out of balance. The imblance of these proteins are primarily responsible for preeclampsia symptoms. High levels of these proteins interfere with the blood vessels ability to attain necessary substances. Without these nutrients, the blood vessels weaken allowing protein to leak into the tissues and urine (a sign of preeclampsia). As a result the blood pressure increases.

It is thought that detecting high levels of these two proteins early in pregnancy may aid in predicting the development of preeclampsia later on in pregnancy.
